I'll be using MS paint and animation shop3 for this tutorial.  All computers come with MS paint but if you do not have animation shop 3 you can download a free trial here.

  Open paint, go to start, programs, accessories, paint.

Click on view, then zoom, then select 800, OK.

Now click on view again, zoom, show grid.

Select the pencil tool

Go to colors, edit color, select black.

Click on the squares till it looks like this

Now go to colors, edit colors, select the second yellow (it's in the second row right beside red).

click OK

Select the color fill tool

Click inside the black and fill the color.

you should now be seeing

Go back to colors, select the same yellow but this time click on define custom colors

Darken the color, I went down 3 then moved the color selection tool over to the red some.

Click OK

Select your pencil tool

go around the edges to make a lowlight color.  It should look something like this

Now go back to colors, edit colors, select the second yellow again, now select a lighter yellow for the highlight effect.

Now highlight the left side with the lighter color just like you just lowlighted the right side.

Now go back to colors, select black, select your pencil tool and fill in the face.

Fill it in to look something like this

Click on file, and click save as smiley and as a bmp

Now its time for animation shop 3

Open animation shop 3, click on  File, animation wizard

click next 4 times, make sure on the second click you have selected transparent.

click on add image

find your image and select it

click next then finish

Now see at the top left where it says zoom 1:1

click on the arrow down button and scroll up till you see 5:1

Click on the crop tool

crop your picture, then click crop, its right above the crop tool

Now click on animation

then replace color

Make sure old color is checked and the old color is white.  (if the old color isn't white, click on the color and select white in your picture, and make sure transparent opacity is checked.

Click OK

this just made your background transparent.

Now click on file, then save as, name you smiley.

That's it, you have just now created your very own smiley!
